Finding this in August 2024. I’d like to ask your thoughts on my situation. I’d had a number of Moderna and Pfizer (we were living in England, Novavax not available, after our initial series before moving, moved back to the US after our September 2023 boosters). In March 23 had my first Novavax. Caught my first case of covid in June. Am trying to plan best timing for my next vaccine, i want to get Novavax from now on. I’m looking for data and science-supported thoughts on 1. when i can get another booster after my mid-June infection; 2. should i still get 2 Novavax 8 weeks apart and then a 3rd 6 months after as i see you recommending (if i have that right)? 3. if so how do you recommend people actually get those first 2 shots at that 8 week interval when faced with systems that don’t even want to give 6 month boosters to a diabetic asthmatic 58 year old, thanks CDC guidelines 🙄?

I’m prepared to try going to different pharmacies without ID, give a fake name, say it’s been a year since i’ve been boosted, and pay out of pocket.

But is there any better, less fraught, more above-board way anyone has found to actually follow your recommendations? How are people managing this?

Thanks very much for your thoughts.

Thank you, Don. I appreciate all your help and support in getting us access to the Novavax, etc.

I had two NOVAvax the last one being 6 months ago. I have been planning to get my third shot in the next week or two based on your earlier recommendation assuming they are still available. Are they? I’m in the US.

All of the Novavax 2023-2024 doses in the USA expired on May 31, 2024. They won't be making any new doses of that in the USA. Novavax is currently manufacturing doses of the 2024-2025 vaccine and will have them in distribution centers in the USA in August. I assume that means they'll be applying for approval in late July or early August so that people can start getting doses then.

The dosage schedule for the booster is *no sooner than* 6 months. So 6-9 months for the booster should be fine.

Though as Don said in this post, you should plan to get 2 doses of the updated JN.1 Novavax, two months apart for the best protection.

In my area, everyone says they are out and the Health Department says they don’t have that vaccine. I had to travel to another state to get my first Novavax 8 months ago. They are making it very difficult to stay up to date.

I tried to get another Novavax. CVS website said they had it at our small town pharmacy, but the RPh couldn't find it. I was in a town 58 miles N and stopped in to the Target CVS. First, I was told they didn't have Novavax, which I questioned. Oh, yeah, we do , but we're not taking walk-ins for vaccines today. Make an appointment. But, your website specifies no appointment needed for Novavax. Too bad, our pharmacist is too busy!

Another day, I go back to the Brainerd Target where I had gotten my last Novavax and the friendlier pharmacist there. She gave me the bad news that her Novavax has expired and she doesn't expect more.

I decided to give in and get the MMR at an upcoming doctor appointment. Seems they just ran out and outdated on all Covid vaccines. So did the next pharmacy. Back to CVS. They have the Pfizer, but you must have an appointment. Go back the next day and get injection 2.5 hours before getting infected on a drive to a political Convention.

Three days later, positive Covid test. Cancel Oncologist appointment, scans, flights, hotel. Back to CVS for Paxlovid. When I tell the clerk my story, she informed me that CVS is no longer giving the vaccine.

I guess preventative medicine is not as profitable as a continuous pandemic...or an opioid epidemic.

Several of them also commented that they thought it is important to have a non-mRNA vaccine available at the same time as mRNA vaccines for people who wish to take non-mRNA vaccines.

I'm over 65 and had tried to get a Novavax booster, to no avail. With an upcoming trip to NY, I decided to give in and get an MRNA. Even that took three attempts and my 3rd choice, CVS, insisted on a next day appointment. The injection occurred a couple of hours before the infection.

Instead of getting my cancer follow up in NY, I am quarantining in rural MN.

Between the political strategy of sweeping Covid under the rug (where it's been joined by H5N1) and the CDC and FDA demonstrating clear preference for MRNA and big pharma, I have zero confidence in what we call "public health."

Thank you for hanging in there and trying to explain a complicated situation to us and the powers that be.

Part of the reason for vaccine uptake dropping is that CDC does not allow healthy people, under 65 to get any more shots since autumn of 2023. The proposed recommendation of "2 shots 2 months apart and additional shots... [within] the 6-9 month window" doesn't specify how many additional shots, and if any after this initial course is over. Looking forward to a clearly stated schedule from the CDC when the new formula arrives. Thank you for this important work you and your colleagues do.
